FMC's command and reconnaissance vehicle was based on the M113A1 armored personnel carrier, and was sometimes referred to as M113A1½. In contrast to the APC, the ACRC's engine was placed in the rear of the vehicle. Various weapons cupolas could be fitted to the commander's station, including the M27 cupola fitted with the M139 20mm gun. An access door was behind the observer on the right side of the vehicle. The front hull of the ACRC was shaped better than that of the M114, allowing the ACRC to cross ditches and exit waterways more easily than the other vehicle. But, M114 was already in production when the ACRC was designed, so it was not accepted by the US Army. The Dutch army, however, bought over 260 ACRCs, and beginning in 1974 fitted them with multiple weapons suites, including a turret designed by Oerlikon armed with a 25mm gun.

The Lynx was a modified form of the FMC ACRC employed by Canada. The Lynx moved the observer from beside the driver to a position behind him, and placed a pintle-mounted 7.62mm machine gun behind the observer's hatch. This crew rearrangement also forced the commander's station to the right of the vehicle's centerline. The side access door was eliminated in favor of a floor escape hatch. Lynx also mounted a smoke grenade launcher behind each headlight cluster.
