The hulls of the M60A1 and M60A2 were converted into bridgelayers. The conversion involved similar external and internal modifications to the AVLB M48A5, removing the turret and housing the crew within the turret ring under cupolas with pivoting hatches, relocating the batteries to the hull front, etc. The operator drove the vehicle and worked the bridge hydraulic controls, while the commander served as a ground guide. The bridge launching and resting equipment was installed on the hull roof, and the scissors-type bridge was stowed on the of the hull. Up to a 60' (18m) span could be crossed with a class 60 or 70 bridge that featured a roadway width of 150" (380cm). Hydraulic cylinders raised the bridge from the chassis, lowered it to the ground, and finally unfolded it. The bridge could be emplaced in 2-5 minutes, and could be retrieved from either end of the bridge in 10 minutes. Slope limits when launching the bridge were 15% uphill and downhill and 8% to the side. Without the bridge, the vehicle was 339.6" (862.6cm) long, 120" (300cm) tall, and 144" (366cm) wide, and it weighed 92,200lb (41,800kg) with a 9.0psi (.63kg/cm²) ground pressure.
