Supplies of 37mm ammunition for the gun found in the CGMC M15A1 dwindled during the early portion of the Korean War, so a number of these half-tracks were modified by replacing the entire gun mount M54 by a mount for an automatic 40mm gun. No armor was provided for the gun crew, in contrast to the original vehicles.
