The M386 was used to launch the Honest John series of free-flight, fin-stabilized surface-to-surface rockets, and was a lighter replacement for the 762mm truck-mounted rocket launcher M289. The M386 was also based on a modified 5-ton 6x6 M139 chassis truck, and a gasoline generator set M25 was again carried. The launching rail over the cab could be split longitudinally, with the halves folding to the rear for travel. Three screw-type leveling jacks were used, a decrease from the five found on the M289. The vehicle was 389" (988cm) long, 105" (267cm) tall, and weighed 34,250lb (15,540kg) without a rocket loaded; and was 135" (343cm) tall with a rocket loaded but without the rocket's fins installed.
